The Rossmoor Tennis Club held their first annual Calcutta  >>>

Calcutta Bidding Party --- October 10, 2014

The Rossmoor Tennis Club held their first annual Calcutta tennis tournament on October 10th, 11th & 12th.   The Calcutta format is an attempt to provide all participants with an equal opportunity to win, no matter what their respective skill levels are.   At the conclusion of the registration period, the players are randomly paired together in mixed doubles pairings, and then a handicap is assigned to each team based on their perceived abilities.   This tedious process was completed by Barb Blum, Trudie Anderson, and Dave Sperry.

An auction was held on Friday Night Oct. 10th to sell each of the 16 teams (32 players) in the tournament.   Fred Barnes was the auctioneer and did an incredible job.   Beverages and food were provided for the players and a nominal fee was charged for the guests.   Fred did an amazing job and the excitement in the Fireside Room was electrifying.   One team went for over $200.   Pauline Hanley was in charge of the party and auction and had immense help from Peter and Colleen Scully procuring the beverages and food.

Play commenced on Sat. morning at 9 am with the first 8 teams.   The last 8 teams played at 10:30.   This completed the first round of play, and all winners stayed in the main draw and all losers were placed in the consolation draw.  Then, all 16 teams played again, and the 8 losers of their 2nd match on Sat. were out of the tournament.   The 8 winners of their 2nd match on Sat. played again on Sun. in the semi-finals of both the main and consolation draws at 9 am.   The four winners then played in the finals of both draws.   All 4 of these team players and their respective owners who were the successful bidders on Friday Night won money from the proceeds of the auction.   Kudos to Ken Anderson for being a wonderful Tournament Director.

Typical of all Rossmoor Tennis Club functions, volunteers came out of the woodwork.   At the party and auction on Friday night, Barb Schwartz, Mary Ann Shields, Dick Normington, Angie Dometrovich, and Loc Barnes were especially helpful.   The proceeds from the auction, player registration, and guests were handled by Barb Schwartz, who wrote checks to the winners, both players and owners immediately after the finals were played.

The winners of the main draw were Loc Barnes and Dave Corliss owned by Fred Barnes.   The finalists of the main draw were Colleen Scully and Ed Logwood owned by Peter Scully.   The consolation draw winners were Margaret Logwood and Fred Barnes owned by Loc Barnes and Ed Logwood.   The finalists of the consolation draw were Mary Ann Shields and Arnold Wong owned by Colleen Scully. Congratulations to all the winners.

Finally, a very big thanks to Lenny Cook for the pics Friday Night and Saturday, being the master chef at the BBQ at noon on Saturday, and to all the volunteers who helped make this first ever event an enjoyable and successful tournament.
