Round Hill Here --- March 21, 2015

RTC Courts 01

This event marked our initial encounter with Round Hill Country Club. It turned out to be a big win for Rossmoor.

On Saturday, March 21, Rossmoor hosted their first major tennis event with the Round Hill Country Club which Rossmoor won with a total score of 17 sets to 7 sets. The tournament used the two set format we have been using at the Villages and Trilogy for years. The tournament consisted of 4 men's, 4 women's, and 4 mixed doubles. At the end of the tournament, Round Hill enjoyed lunch and conversation at the Buckeye social area. The individual match scores were:

Men's Doubles:
Larry Barclay and Frank Haswell lost their two sets 5-7, 5-7. Despite the lose, this was the best and longest match of the day - an exhibition of four hard hitting titan pounding ground stroke, volleys, and overheads. For most of the match, it was hard to tell who was winning.

Dave Kern and Randy Kuhl won their two sets 6-4, 6-2. Kern's attacking the net and precise overheads plus Kuhl's shot variety, volleys, and drop shots made for a winning day.

Rob Ingalls and Eugene Ovalle won their two sets 6-5, 6-0. Ingalls' agility and effective half volley contributed to their win as did Eugene Ovalle's ground strokes and well placed volleys.

Barry Brian and Chris Christopher won their two sets 6-0, 6-0. Brian and Christopher's strategy of keeping their opponents on the defensive with deep ground stokes, good court coverage and communication, and well placed overheads resulted in their decisive win.

Women's Doubles,
Mary Jane Kiefer and Becky Reiss won their two sets 6-4, 6-3. Shin Kim and Judy Corliss lost their two sets 2-6, 0-6. Gay White and Mary Kay McClure spilt their sets 6-1, 3-6. Janet Battistini and Barbara Blum won their two sets 6-2, 6-2. Barbara said that after getting passed down the middle numerous times, they stepped up their communication and teamwork to win the match.

Mixed Doubles:
Allen Tam and Trudie Anderson won their two sets 6-5, 6-5. The combination of Tam's hard slices, speed, and shot retrieval; and Anderson steady forehand shots got them the win in this tough match. Ed Logwood and Jan Perez split sets 6-2, 1-6. Murray Veroff and Lil Kuhl won their two sets 6-1, 7-6 with Murray's wide slice serves, slice forehands and backhands, and Lil's steady forehand play. Ken Haley and Loc Barnes split sets 6-5, 3-6 playing steady, competitive tennis.

The tournament organizer, Ron Wyman, thanks the many people who helped set up the social area for breakfast snacks and Lunch ... starting with his wife, Elaine, who helped with the food selection and ordering; Dave Kern who golf carted the breakfast food and ice up to the social area; Allan Tam who clean the social area; Randy and Lil Kuhl who help with the set up and clean up; Loc Barnes who help with the set up and provided the "Welcome Round Hill" signs; Rolf Kvalvik who picked up and delivered the lunch; Rob Ingalls who golf carted the lunch food from the parking lot to the social area; Becky Reiss who carried some of the food trays from the parking lot and provided the mayo and mustard for our sandwiches, and all the others who helped make this an enjoyable event.

He also wanted to thank the three alternates who came to support the team - Carol Pillsbury and Linda Spiegelman who agreed to play for Round Hill who was short two women player - and especially Joan Warner who, due to a line up confusion, did not get to play but stayed and supported the team.
