RTC Courts 01 Rossmoor triumphs over The Villages

One of the premier tennis interclub events Rossmoor looks forward to hosting every year is the tournament with the Villages.   Both clubs have a long history playing each other and many friendships have formed over the past 20 year of playing these events.   On April 18, Rossmoor hosted the Villages at the Buckeye courts for a sunny day of tennis, lunch, and socializing.   On this occasion, Rossmoor was triumphant winning back the coveted champions plaque from The Villages.  The tennis, lunch, and socializing was extra special because of the long time relationship Rossmoor and the Villages have with each other.

The tournament format consisted of 4 men's, 4 women's, and 4 mixed doubles playing 2 sets each.   The team wining the most sets wins the tournament.   This year, Rossmoor won the tournament scoring 13 sets to the Villages 11 sets. The individuals match scores were as follows:

Men's Doubles:

Larry Barclay's heavy deep forehands and Mike Balg's laser beam forehand winners gave them a decisive two set win of 6-0, 6-0.   Dave Kern's signature overheads and Randy Kuhl's trademark drop shots gave them a two set win of 7-6, 6-1.

Chris Christopher and Ron Wyman started off slow losing the first set 4-6 and falling behind in the second set 1-5 before fighting back with hard serves, stronger forehands, put away overheads and volleys to win the next six games and take the set 7-5.   Allen Kent and Ed Logwood won their two sets easily 6-1, 6-0

Women's Doubles:

Sherry Endicott and Patty Richardson won 2 sets 6-0, 6-2. Pauline Hanley and Mary Ann Shields lost 2 sets 3-6, 4-6.   Gay White and Mary Kay McClure lost 2 sets 3-6, 4-6. Irene Wong and Nelly Sawczuk won 2 sets 6-4, 6-2.

Mixed Doubles:

Frank Haswell's precision forehands and Becky Reiss' aggressive net play resulted in their 6-1, 6-1 two set win.   Mike and Eppie Ying lost 2 sets 0-6,1-6. Larry Fredricks and Barbara Blum lost 2 sets 3-6, 4-6.   Fred and Loc Barnes lost 2 sets 4-6, 5-7.

Tournament director Randy Kuhl wants to thank all the volunteers including Lil Kuhl for set up and clean up, Rolf Kvalvik for cleaning off all the benches and chairs, Sally Nordwall for writing up the name tags and keeping score, Loc Barnes and Irene Wong for the table settings, Fred Barnes for his heavy lifting, Dave Kern for ice delivery, as well as Eppie and Mike Ying, Barbara Blum and Ken Haley who all stayed late to clean up.
