Buckeye Grove was filled with music, food and more than 50 tennis aficionados on Saturday evening 18 August. It was the tennis club's Jimmy Buffet themed "Burgers in Paradise" party.
The festive atmosphere was made possible by the efforts of Mary Ann Shields and other club members who gathered parrots, festive tablecloths, parrot lights and other tropical decorations. Byron Kelly worked the blender serving up custom margaritas with a variety of salt rimmed glasses. Lenny Cook served up perfectly done burgers and special request entrees, staying cool while thinking of the kayak trip along Puget Sound glaciers that he took two weeks ago.
The home-made side dishes of salads, casseroles and desserts brought by the club's excellent chefs were all mouth-watering.
As the evening cooled some players got on the courts for friendly doubles matches. The Tennis Club's Saturday evening BBQ's, following a potluck format, will continue throughout the summer.

Our wonderful new social area has been perfect for barbecues. During the summer months, between Memorial Day and Labor Day, club members gather on each Saturday late afternoon, for tennis for those who want, and then a pot luck dinner.
The club has certified specific members as "grill-meisters" as special knowledge, and good grilling skills are required. This is very informal and a lot of fun.
The BBQ will be fired up around 5:00 pm.
Weather permitting, some groups organize some tennis around 4 pm to precede the barbecue feast.
Each person brings
Something of their own for the grill,
Something for the group to share. Salads, appetizers, and desserts are examples of shared dishes.
Drinks are each individual's responsibility
Utensils and plates.
Enjoy great food to share and the wonderful company of our tennis friends.
Note: This runs from the first Saturday after the Memorial Day to the Saturday immediately before Labor Day
Always scheduled on 2/14 (Valentine's Day) at Hillside Clubhouse. There is no charge for club members as this is a pot luck, with everyone bringing something to share.
Wine, beer, and soft drinks are provided by the club, as well as paper plates, eating utensils, and napkins. Entertainment can be everything from dancing or line dancing to Karaoke. This is always a fun low-key party.
Scheduled on the 3rd Saturday in April and held in the Fireside Room at Gateway. Members pay an entry fee for their catered dinner and Happy Hour.
Very special, lively entertainment is provided by Tennis Club members themselves. Who can forget our "muscle man" or the bathing trio? Adult beverages and soft drinks are provided by the Club. This tends to be one hilarious evening.
The Kentucky Derby Party
This has proven to be a remarkably fun get together. We not only have our own "betting office" at the event where we can place our wagers, but there is also a lot of food, fun and excitement.
The ladies are encouraged to wear hats that can be classified as beautiful, creative or outrageous. There will be a panel of judges who picks the winner in each category. There have been some very interesting entries!
The food for this event will be primarily finger goodies so that people can mingle while eating. Some very good appetizers, etc. to keep you coming back for more! And don't forget the mint juleps!
Of course we also have a group of volunteers who act as bookies who will take your bet of $2.00 to $20.00 on the most famous of all horse races. When the event starts, and all eyes are on the big screen television, it will be the most exciting 2 minutes of sports anyone will experience. Don't miss it.

Christmas and Hanukah are festive times of year and the Rossmoor Tennis Club traditionally has a wonderful Holiday party. Usually it is scheduled for the last Saturday before Christmas, and has always had a wonderful turnout. Following arriving and drinks, there is a catered sit-down dinner, where members can select to sit together with friends or be placed at a table by the party committee. Throughout this part of the evening there is music and some entertainment, but the real party starts after dinner when the dancing gets going. The room is always very festive with a theme and gorgeous centerpieces, a roaring fire, and plenty of mingling. As RTC members are a gregarious group, and pretty well known to each other, this is one popular happening.
Scheduled 3rd Saturday in December at Fireside Room at Gateway. Attendees will pre-pay an entry fee. Catered dinner and Happy Hour provided by Tennis Club. Tennis Club business matters including Service Awards, and introduction of new Tennis Club Board Directors. Featured entertainment is dancing to DJ music.
Since this is such a congenial group of men, women, singles and couples, this party is always a highlight of the year, and the Holidays.
